10/27/2017 Fourth Grade

10/27/17

Dear Fourth Grade Families,
We have had an exciting and productive week in ELA!  Here is an update:

Humanities:  We are focusing on maps and map skills. Students have gone on a virtual field trip through Google Maps.  We are learning about landforms as well.

We have also started learning about Veteran's Day.  In fourth grade students participate in a writing contest in order to be chosen to be a part of the Veteran's Day celebration in town on 11/11 at 11 am.  Students will be writing an essay on, "Why we should honor our veterans."  We have watched some videos on the history of Veteran's Day and had a couple of classroom conversations.  We encourage students to talk with their families about possible answers to this prompt.  Mr. Kinnarney will choose the winning essays by 11/3.  The top three essay winners will read their essays at the ceremony and 10 students will be chosen to place flowers on the memorial.

Dear Families,
Despite the rain, we have had a very productive week!  Here is an what we have been doing:

Reading:  We have been working on lifting the level of our conversations about our reading.  We have been reading Stone Fox together and practicing together.  Then, students used those strategies to meet with a partner and discuss their independent reading books.  We have been SO impressed with how focused and insightful these conversations have been.

Writing:  Today we finished our Launching Writer's Workshop Unit!  We are ready to begin our first piece on Monday which will be a personal narrative.  Students have done a great job building up their writing stamina and learning strategies good writers use.

Halloween:
  • Please feel free to send in any healthy or sweet treat for your child to share with their homeroom class at snack time!  (Both homerooms have 21 students.)

October 20, 2017

Dear Families,
We have had a great week! Here is an update...

Reading: We started Stone Fox and are learning how to give ourselves a 'comprehension check' while we read.

Writing: We learned how to add similes and how to write in complete sentences! Students rocked the lesson on similes and had some very creative sentences!

Halloween: As in the past, students are permitted to wear costumes on Halloween. Mr. Kinnarney has established that there are to be no masks or props brought in with the costume. We will allow students to wear their costumes during snack. If students choose, they may bring in a treat to share with the class. Please make sure, if you choose to make treats for the class, that there is one for everyone in the homeroom. Both homerooms each have 21 students. Please do not feel obligated to bring in something for both classes.

Dear Families,

It was a short week but we ended with a high, making it to the top of Owl's Head! It was a hike full of slips, falls, and bee stings but these kids just kept on smiling the whole way! Here is what we have been doing...

Reading:  We continued to read, The Twits, which you can tell from the High/Lows that it has been a favorite among our classes!  We are focusing on character traits that are supported with evidence from the text as well as setting.

Writing: We are working on pushing our thinking to add to entries.  We also learned the strategy of 'lifting a line' from an old entry to create a new one.  We also learned how we can make our writing better by adding precise verbs.
