Third Grade 12/21/17

Dear Families,
What a busy week it has been!  We have had so many fun events and have been very productive with our academic work as well.  Here is an update:

Writing:  We have typed, published, and presented our personal narratives!  We are so proud of our students and all of their hard work. 

Reading:  We finished our winter Track My Progress assessments!  We are proud of how focused our students were, and how they persevered!

12/14/17 Third Grade

Dear Families,
What a week!  Students are certainly enjoying all the snow on the playground!  Here is what we have been up to:

Writing:  We are learning how to use Google Docs to publish the final drafts of our personal narratives!  Students have learned to log onto their accounts, create a doc, name it, and share it.  Today, we will learn how to type our stories.  Students are very excited to publish on the computer!

Reading:  We finished, The War with Grandpa and have been focusing on independent reading and responding to texts.

Global Studies:  We are continuing to learn about holidays and traditions around the world!  We have studied Sinterklaas Day, Hanukkah, and Saint Lucia Day.

Third Grade 11/30/2017


Dear Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  It is hard to believe that tomorrow will already be December.  The time between Thanksgiving and Winter Break can be hectic, but is a very important stretch academically.  Here is what we have been doing:

Reading:  We started, The War With Grandpa.  We are practicing using the reading strategy of asking deeper questions about the text and the author's writing strategies.

Writing:  We worked on different leads for our narratives and will begin revising!  By the end of next week we should be ready to publish our final drafts!  This is a very exciting time for our young writers.

Social Studies: We are learning about celebrations around the world!  We then are comparing those celebrations to our own.  We are also mapping locations and using this content to teach close reading strategies.

Dear Families,
We are away at a literacy conference tomorrow so our blog is going up a day early.  We are very bummed to miss tomorrow's Thanksgiving meal but know that you will have a wonderful time enjoying the meal and chatting with your student!  Here is an update:

Writing:  We are drafting!  This is a VERY exciting time for our young writers!  During the drafting process we will learn how to make our writing better and strengthen our storyteller voice! 

Reading:  Students are learning to use clues in the text to solve tricky words.  We have been practicing in both reading and social studies.

Social Studies:  We are studying about the pilgrims, their journey, and life in the new world!

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We have had a great week!  Students selected to participate in the Veteran's Day celebration have been working hard practicing and preparing.  We hope as many as possible will join us Saturday at 11am for this event.  Here is what we have been doing:

Humanities:  We have switched our focus from mapping to Vermont.  We started a new read aloud, Cave of Falling Water which is set in Vermont of 3 different time periods.

Reading:  Students have been working hard on their reading 'grit'!  They did a self assessment and made reading goals to improve their grit.  Then, they learned and practiced word attack strategies they can use when they come across difficult words.

Writing:  Students have all chosen the topic for their personal narratives!  Everyone has conferenced with Mrs. Thompson to discuss their topics and we are ready to start drafting!

Dear Families,
What a crazy week!  Thankfully, we are back into our routines!  We hope power has been restored to your family.  Here is an update:

Humanities
We completed our Veteran's Day writing contest and are pleased to announce that Aubrey, Nick, and Clara have been chosen to read their pieces at the ceremony!  Courtney, Kyle, Maria, Sam, and Milly have been chosen to be flower bearers. 

We have also been spending a lot of time learning about characteristics of maps and reading maps.  Next week, we will begin creating maps of our own.

High/Low

High- We got to go to the lower field and have indoor recess
Low- we missed two days
High- we got to type thank you letters
Low- we had to do pacers in PE
High- we had indoor recess
Low- I have a headache from the pacers
High- I did 25 laps on the pacer and we had indoor recess and we didn’t have two days of school
High- we did the pacers in gym class
Low- Only one outdoor recess
High- I did 98 laps in the pacer and I get to read my essay at the Veterans Day memorial
