10/24/19 Third Grade

10/24/19

Dear Families,
We have had a great week! Here is an update:

Reading: Students are continuing to work on ways to better comprehend what they are reading. They are working on sticky noting and applying the strategies they learned in our lessons to their independent reading.

Writing: We have started brainstorming ideas for our personal narratives. We will learn three strategies for brainstorming and then students will choose an idea. We will take this writing piece through the entire writing process.

High- we are working on a new song in music elective on guitar

High- we are finally finishing Stone Fox
High- Me, Leah, and Savannah get to have lunch with Mr. Smoller

High- in onward we found a baby squirrel and we got to pet baby ferrets

Dear Families,
We've had a short week but we've accomplished a lot!  Here's what we have been up to:

Reading:
We have started a new read aloud, Stone Fox.  Students are working on understanding books more deeply.  This week we worked on giving ourselves quick comprehension checks as we go.

Writing:
We are finishing up launching our writer's workshop!  We are working on writing more complex sentences and have continued working on building our writing stamina.  Next week we will begin to focus on writing personal narratives.

Dear Families,
What an exciting week we are in the middle of!  We have Open House, Blue Devil Pride Day,  the hike on Friday AND the first ever Homecoming up at the high school.  We hope you will bring your family and enjoy the festivities!  Homecoming will conclude with what promises to be an amazing fireworks show!

Reading:
Students have been hard at work reading independently, conferencing, and choosing books!  We will start our new unit, Building a Reading Life, next week.

Writing:
Students are learning about what makes a complete sentence and how to add details to make our sentences more descriptive.

Dear Families,
Rain, rain, go away!  With all the rain that we have had we are waiting to see if we can hike tomorrow.  Mr. Clark will be making a decision by the end of the day and we will let you know.  The rain date is October 11th.  Here's an update:

Reading:  Students are learning about character traits and major/minor characters.  They have started sticky noting observations in their independent reading books.

Writing:  We have learned about adding sound words and various color words into our writing to help the reader make a clearer picture in their heads.  Students are still working on building their writing stamina by adding to entries in their writer's notebooks.
