12/15/23 Third Grade


12/15/23

Dear Families,

What a week!  Hopefully we are done with our Monday snow episodes!  Here is what we have been up to:

Literacy:  We will be finishing Stone Fox on Monday.  Students are doing a great job telling the important events of a chapter and leaving out the unimportant details.  In writing, students are finishing up drafting their narratives.  Next week we will focus on revising and editing!

Dear Families,

We've had a great week in third grade!  Here is what we have been up to:

Literacy:

We have started reading the book, Stone Fox.  We are learning how we can 'walk over' some details that aren't important when summarizing a story.  Students are practicing pulling out the important part/s of a chapter.  In writing, we have chosen our topics for our personal narratives!  Students will begin drafting on Monday.

We have started to focus on personal narratives.  We have been reading personal narratives and brainstorming what might have inspired those stories.  Students will be moving into writing their own narratives in the coming weeks.

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful week highlighted by our annual Halloween Parade through town!  Here is what we have been up to in class:

Literacy:  We have started the read aloud, The War with Grandpa.  We use this book as a mentor text to think about personal narratives. In the coming weeks students will begin reading and writing personal narratives. In word study, we focused on vowel teams.

Dear Families,

We capped off a wonderful week with a surprise, school-wide Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament!  Here is what we have been up to:

Literacy:  We finished reading The Twits and talking about character traits!  In writing, students have been hard at work creating entries in their writer's notebooks.  We are so impressed with their stamina and creativity.

Literacy:  We have started 'word study' with our third graders.  During this time we will be learning about letters and sounds in order to be able to decode larger words.  Also, we have been continuing to conference with students about what they are reading.

We have had a great week in third grade literacy.  Here is what we have been up to:

Literacy:  Students completed a brainstorm in their writer's notebooks about our trip to the Shelburne Museum!  We have also been working on independent reading, completing responses to our reading, and conferencing.  On Friday, the Williamstown Fire Department visited.  We learned about fire safety and were able to go into the truck!
