1/26/2018 Fourth Grade


1/26/2018

Dear Families,
We have had a wonderful week in fourth grade ELA.  Here is an update:

Reading:  We started our nonfiction unit by focusing on the various text structures writers use.  In combination with our study of Vermont we are reading an nonfiction book on Phineas Gage.  We encourage you to ask your student about who Phineas Gage was!

Writing:  We have been focusing on responding to a prompt.  Students are learning how to begin with a 'hook' and provide evidence to support their opinions.

High/Low

High- we got to play Gladiator Ball, we had indoor recess most of this week and could play prodigy
Low- Almost passed out after PE!
High- Being able to do Gladiator Ball, and getting to shelve books with Mrs. Moore
Low- indoor recess, got hit in the eye at gladiator ball
High- Gladiator Ball, we are almost done with ABC book, It’s Friday
Low- indoor recess
High- we played Gladiator Ball!  We are so close to finishing our ABC books
Low- couldn’t go to Mr. Smoller’s
High- Yesterday we did kickball and Gladiator Ball
Low- It’s super sunny out
High- It’s Friday, we played Gladiator Ball
High- We played kickball yesterday, I made a homerun
Low- It’s Friday
High- I was able to be here on Friday and Monday
Low- I have been sick
High- I got Student of the Month and we played Gladiators in PE yesterday
High- I memorized a song on my saxophone, we are almost finished our ABC book
High- We played kickball and Gladiator Ball, It’s Friday
Low- Indoor recess
High- We are one word away from finishing our ABC books and we got our 20 sticker acknowledgment

High- We completed our ABC book just need to format,
Low- we couldn’t go outside all week
High- we are really far into our ABC book
Low- we aren’t finished with it yet, and I was absent when we played kickball and Gladiator Ball
High- I memorized the 50 states
Low- I got a cold
High- I was absent 2 days
Low- I was sick 2 days
High- Indoor recess, I didn’t slip on the ice.
Low- It’s completely icy and cold
High- We played gladiator and kickball
Low- Hard to find all of our letters for our ABC book
High- We played Gladiator Ball in PE and I’m almost done with my ABC book
Low- I was absent one day
High- Starting Phineas Gage
Low- Indoor recess and lots of kids absent

Dear Families,
We have had a wonderful week!  Here is what we have been doing:

Reading: We are continuing our nonfiction reading unit. We worked in our nonfiction reading partnerships to find the main idea and supporting details in our books.

Writing: We are finishing up our descriptive shoe pieces! Students spent the week using a checklist to improve their writing and then type them. They are learning how to insert pictures into their documents.

1/19/2018 Fourth Grade

Dear Families,
We have had a productive week in humanities!  Here's an update:

Humanities:  We are working on writing thorough responses to prompts using evidence.  To do this, students are working on opinion pieces with the topic, "Who was more important to Vermont, Ira Allen or Ethan Allen." We finished reading How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay.  We will be moving into our nonfiction unit.

High- making plaster masks in elective, brought paper roller coaster home, outdoor recess all week
High- almost done my abc book, found  a cool design
Low- I was sick
High- almost done my abc book, I was absent a day
Low- Missed snowshoeing and skiing

We have been working hard in third grade!  here is an update...

Reading:  We are continuing with our nonfiction unit.  Students are working with a nonfiction reading partner to practice the strategies taught during lessons. 

Writing:  Writers have been learning how to had sensory details to their work.  They will be rewriting their shoe pieces to add more description.

1/12/2018 Fourth Grade

Dear Fourth Grade Families,
It has been a long time since we have been able to do a fourth grade meeting and write a blog!  We hope you had a wonderful break and survived that cold snap.  Here is an update:

Humanities:  We finished our historical fiction narratives, set in Vermont, that continued on with the next chapter of Cave of Falling Water that we read.  We are continuing to focus on Vermont, and are working on summarizing stories.  We are using the read aloud, How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay to practice this strategy.  This book is also set in Vermont and follows a family from the Dominican Republic, who move to Vermont from NYC.

High-  Ms. Maroney checked my saxophone and it can be played, we got to go out and use the sleds, yesterday Mr. Currier let me use his shows
Low- forgot my shoes both PE days
High- Almost done with ABC book pics, I got to do hockey in PE and we won 2-1
Low- On the sled I crashed
High- We are done with our roller coasters, we finished for 20 stickers and get to do gymnastics
Low- we almost didn’t finish our roller coasters
High- we got to go outside and have good weather
Low- my team lost in hockey
High- we got all 20 stickers and are doing gymnastics and the ropes, abc books
Low- no extra outdoor recess
High- we played PIG and I won all of the times

High- orchestra is today, we had outdoor recess for most of the week

High- we were able to take the sleds out, indoor recess
Low- we can’t go outside for extra recess

Low- I have to do math instead of the board games with Mrs. Locarno, it’s Friday and I don’t want to leave you guys for the week yet
High- almost finished my ABC book
High- I am doing computer games
High- we took the sleds out, we earned our twenty stickers, we get to do our ABC books, we get to do the ropes in PE
Low- We have to do gymnastics
High- the number of people who worked hard and stayed focus and met the goal on TMP
Low- we aren’t able to acknowledge you by taking you out

High- Personal narratives are done and printed out!

Dear Families,
After a very short week back, we had a wonderful FULL week!  Here is an update:

Reading:  We began our nonfiction unit focusing on text features.  Students are really engaged in our read aloud about ferocious animals.  I encourage you to ask them about it!

Writing:  We are continuing our work with adding description.  This week we focused on sensory details.

Social Studies:   We focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this week

1/4/2018 Third Grade

Dear Families,
We hope you had a wonderful vacation.  We both spent time with our families and were very busy!  It's nice to be back to school and back in the routine of things.  Here is what we have done (so far) this week...

Writing:  We have started a descriptive writing mini unit.  Students were asked yesterday to write about their shoes!  We will use these pieces to learn various strategies authors use to write descriptively.

Reading:  We are starting a new unit on non fiction! 

Social Studies:  We will continue learning about holidays and traditions around the world.
