12/19/19 Third Grade

12/19/19

Dear Families,
Thank you to all who were able to attend our concert on Tuesday! Our students worked very hard and were excited to perform.  This week is usually a hectic one, but we have been amazed how calm and focused our students have been.  We have been busy doing crafts, making gifts, and enjoying spirit week!  Here's an update:

Writing:  We are working on a special, top secret, writing project that will come home Friday :)

Reading:  We are continuing to learn about celebrations around the world.  We were excited to welcome Mrs. Slayton to talk about celebrations in Thailand! 

We want to wish all of our third grade families a Happy New Year!  We look forward to working with your students in 2020!

Dear Families,
We have had a very productive week! Here is an update:

Writing:  Students have published and shared our personal narratives!  It was nice to see how proud students were of their work.  We are working on a special writing project that will go home before break.

Reading:  We are continuing with our Celebrations Around the World!  Students also spent some time playing dreidel!  As you can see from their high/lows this week, it was a hit!

Dear Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Students have done a wonderful job getting back on track after Experiential Learning and the long weekend.  Here is an update:

Writing:  Our personal narratives are complete!  For this piece we had a few areas we were focusing on.  First, we worked on using a 'storyteller's voice'.  We also learned how to add dialogue to make our stories more interesting.  Finally, we focused on our introductions.  Pieces should be coming home this week!

Reading:  We are learning about celebrations around the world.  Students are reading informational passages and practicing using context clues to fill in missing words.

Dear Families,
We have had a very productive week despite the unexpected snow day.  We have been so proud of how focused they have been through out all of our learning blocks.  Here is what we have been up to:

Writing:  Students worked on revising their drafts with a partner.  They did a great job of adding, subtracting, changing, or moving parts in order to make their piece better.  We are hoping to have these stories published by tomorrow!  Look for them to be coming home.

Reading:  We have been focusing on close reads about the first Thanksgiving.  Students are learning to find evidence in the passage to support their answers and the importance of rereading to find information.

Reading:  We have finished, The War with Grandpa, and are moving into a mini unit on 'close' reads.

10/31/19 Third Grade

Happy Halloween!
Kids came in very excited for our Halloween parade.  Be sure to check out the WES Facebook page for more pictures.  Here's what we have been doing:

Reading:  We started a new read aloud, The War with Grandpa.  Students are working on asking questions while they read to better understand the text.

Writing:  We have been brainstorming topics for our personal narratives.  Tomorrow students will be choosing their topic and will begin rehearsing their idea for their story.

Dear Families,
What a week!  Here's an update:

Writing:  We have started typing our drafts of our personal narratives!  Students learned how to use a storyteller's voice instead of a newscaster's voice when writing.  We will work on revising and editing our drafts in order to publish our first writing pieces!

Reading:  We are continuing with The War with Grandpa and working on making connections to the text.  Students are then applying the strategy of making connections in their independent reading book.

Dear Families,
We have had a great week! Here is an update:

Reading: Students are continuing to work on ways to better comprehend what they are reading. They are working on sticky noting and applying the strategies they learned in our lessons to their independent reading.

Writing: We have started brainstorming ideas for our personal narratives. We will learn three strategies for brainstorming and then students will choose an idea. We will take this writing piece through the entire writing process.
